Italy offered to integrate VOLCANEX 2006 activities into the Italian Air Force Exercise SPRING FLAG in May 2006. During SPRING FLAG/VOLCANEX-06 (SF/V-06) the amalgamation of activities provided excellent multinational training opportunities for both EAG and non-EAG participants. For the EAG the focus was primarily, but not exclusively, on the validation of available products of the Deployable Multinational Air Wing (DMAW) project. Decimomannu (Sardinia) simulated a Deployment Operating Base (DOB) where the EAG could review the tactical level efficacy of its work. Additionally, France hosted multinational Force protection element of SF/V-06.

  • a Multinational CSAR task force (including extraction teams, survivors, etc) to finalise the EAG CSAR Mission Planning Guide;

  • a multinational bulk fuel installation consisting of three forward BFIs (FRA, ITA, GBR) which had the capability to refuel approximately 12 aircraft each simultaneously and a forward arming and refueling point (FARP) ( FRA) to refuel rotary wing aircraft. The FARP was resupplied by bowsers (ITA);

  • a multinational force providing Force Protection (FP) and Engineering with the emphasis on C3. This activity took place in Vouziers (FRA) and the scenario required a force to secure and then prepare a bare base for the landing of 4 Tactical Transport aircraft from FRA, DEU and BEL simulating a refugee evacuation operation; For more information on this specific event contact the area director;

  • a multinational CIS architecture fully integrated into the air C2 for all activities at the DOB and for linkage to higher formations;

  • a Combined Air Terminal Operation;

  • a multinational logistics cell (MNLC) which coordinated and, where appropriate, controled logistics activity.
