FP Workshop 2011
October 2011, Brussels, Belgium
Calling Letter for FP Workshop

From 12th to 14th October, the EAG Force Protection Workshop was hosted by the Belgium Air Force and held at the Club Price Albert in Brussels, Belgium.
The workshop’s overall goal was to prepare the Force Protection C2 element of VOLCANEX 2012. The following objectives were dealt with:
- Creation of procedures to run a FP C2
- Creation of checklists
- Definition of necessary equipment and capabilities
- Definition of personnel requirements and capabilities
- Definition of FP C2 structure for VOLCANEX 2012 if already possible
The EAG Force Protection Workshop was formally opened and closed by the EAG FP Area Director, LTC Antoine Humbert. Underlining the strong relationship between the EAG and NATO CC Air, LTC Frits van Balveren chief FP section also participated in the workshop and introduced the participants to the latest developments in NATO FP Doctrines and SOPs.
Each of the 7 EAG nations sent participants to the workshop. Furthermore, Norway and Sweden participated resulting in 23 participants from 9 nations.
A lot of very good results have been reached in preparation of VOLCANEX 2012 and some keystones were set, making the further planning process much easier; it was agreed that we will include another objective in the FP part of VOLCANEX 2012. GBR kindly offered to run a C2 structure including manning and equipment in the FIT phase and then it is planned to have a complete TOA to a multinational C2 structure at the FTX.
All participants of the workshop agreed that this was an ideal occasion to learn from each other, to develop common understanding and to discuss different points of view in a multinational atmosphere.
The support provided by the Belgium Air Force, as the host nation, was outstanding. All the participants were unanimous in recognising that the host nation, and especially Major Dirk Vleugels, as our POC, put a lot of effort into hosting the workshop in the best way possible. As a cultural highlight, a visit of the Belgium Museum took place on the second evening, followed by a nice common dinner in Brussels.

FP Seminar 2009
March 2009, Soesterberg, The Netherlands
From 2 to 5
of March, the 2009 edition of the EAG Force protection seminar was hosted by the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) and held at the Officers’ Casino in Soesterberg, Netherlands.
The seminar objectives were “to enhance the participant’s knowledge of Force Protection matters across the EAG nations plus Norway and Sweden, achieved through sharing of information, discussions and reflection activities in syndicate and plenary sessions”
Formally opened by Colonel Blom, RNLAF Cdr Force Protection Branch, and formally closed by Major Mainguy, EAG Force Protection Area Director, the seminar was articulated around two main efforts:
- A series of presentations of present nations’ capabilities and operational experience;
- Three workshop sessions studying multinational operational scenarios, similar to current deployments emphasising international force protection planning. The participants were split into four syndicates.
Every nation within the EAG sent participants to the seminar. Furthermore, Norway and Sweden sent participants, totalling 34 officers from 9 different nations.
A lot of very interesting exchanges have been made, showing that this seminar is a useful tool, indicating where other nations are deployed facing similar problems with manning and funding. All participants agreed that the seminar is an ideal occasion to learn from each other, to exchange information and to discuss different points of view in a multinational atmosphere.
The support provided by the RNLAF as the host nation was definitely outstanding. All the participants were unanimous to recognise that the host nation and Major Thom Spee, RNLAF, put a lot of effort into hosting the seminar in the best possible way. As a cultural highlight, a visit of the Dutch Museum of Flight History took place on the second evening, followed by a hosted dinner.
