AVMED

The field of AVMED offers a wide range of opportunities for the EAG to contribute to interoperability. Some of recent achievements have been the AVMED Technical Agreement (TA) and the subsequent AVMED Coordination Board (CB), the AVMED Course, the Aeromedical Evacuation Catalogue and other important initiatives. In support of the AVMED CB, the EAG promotes cooperation between the Nations in the field of AVMED and through the EAG, a multinational Flight Surgeon community has been created throughout Europe.  The community is also open to non-EAG partners. For example, non-EAG lecturers and students participate in the EAG Advanced AVMED Course.

The AVMED TA and CB

The AVMED CB was established in 2005, as a corollary of the Technical Arrangement signed in 2005 by the seven EAG Air Chiefs. The CB is the committee, comprising one National specialist representative from each nation and personnel from the EAG LOGS area, which promotes and facilitates collaboration and co-operation between the EAG air forces in the field of AVMED. Common knowledge, exchange of information and consultation are the building blocks for the CB to achieve its aim. The Board meets twice per year, supervising the overall activities under the AVMED TA and coordinating the European Advanced AVMED Course. Furthermore, the CB can be tasked to conduct additional Aeromedical matters by the EAG Nations. The CB has even become a reference for the international military AVMED community.

The AVMED course

The aim of the course is to fill a gap in the advanced training of flight surgeons and in the development of AVMED. The course draws on the best resources of the participating nations, each providing module lectures on specific fields of excellence. The students are a selection of senior flight surgeons from EAG Nations but it is open to non-EAG Nations’ students, provided that they are sponsored by one of the EAG Nations. The course is 7 weeks long and takes place in 5 of the EAG countries at some of the most advanced military AVMED institutions in Europe.
